Begining from your hotel in Santiago, we head south to towards the Maipo Valley renowned worldwide for its history and for its modernization within the wine industry. For the most part, this is red-wine country, with Cabernet Sauvignon most celebrated, and also good examples of Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon being produced. We will visit the Concha y Toro Vineyard, founded in 1833 by Melchor Santiago de Concha y Cerda, and his wife, Emiliana Subercaseaux. The winery was established by bringing grape varieties direct from the Bordeaux region in France, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot, and Carménère.
Our visit begins at the Don Melchor Plaza where we enjoy a panoramic view of the Pirque vineyard before a stroll through the winery's century old buildings. A visit is made to the Pirque House, the residence of the Concha y Toro family where 100 years ago, what is today Chile's largest wine company was established.
A visit is also made to the Devil's Cellar - the origin of the vineyard's "Casillero del Diablo" trademark. Return to Santiago.
